Chords: Trouble So Hard / Natural Blues by Vera Hall / Moby

A short, sweet, surprisingly-lovely-when-sung-acoustic-style song for this week. Though my vocals are nowhere near as pretty as the original – because how an anyone truly hold a candle to that beautiful soul? –it’s still a gorgeous version.

Come get you some simple, transposed ukulele chords for this lovely blues song…

In the 90s, Moby had a hit with a song called Natural Blues, which basically lifted the vocals from a 1930s track called Trouble So Hard by Vera Hall and put some instrumentation behind them. The result was a fusion of gospel, arty-dance, and pop. It worked.

When I was young, about a thousand years ago, the Moby song was everywhere on release, like, constantly on the radio Everywhere, and the album it’s from (Play) was something more-or-less every student owned, much like the Greatest Hits of REM. But these dusty memories are stories for another time…

Here’s my Imperfection Project cover of Natural Blues, featuring appearances by both my moglets (blink and you’ll miss my girl though):

Despite some clipping, and some ill-timed scritching by an insistent tabby – during a quiet bit, no less! – it came out quite nicely.

And here are the chords I’m playing:

As you’ll have spotted, they’re not in the original key, but transposed for ease, and to fit my voice a little better. I’m sure you’ll do a much nicer job than I have.

Love always,

Fay

P.S. Here’s the Moby version that this is based on. Enjoy!
