Chords: Lover by Taylor Swift
HAPPY NEW YEAR Y’ALL!
At some point I should probably write something self-reflective about the new decade, given that I’m full of thoughts and ideas and whatnot about it.
In the meantime, please accept this cover and chordsheet for the biggest grower from Taylor Swift’s most recent album: the titular track, Lover.
I love the work of Taylor Swift. Always have, because I like modern country, so I was all up ons before she made her phoenix rising evolution sidestep into pop music. I’m a hopeless, overwrought romantic at heart, and she writes songs that speak to me. She also has a way of writing really catchy tunes from very basic chord progressions, making it easy (and fun) to play a lot of her songs. It’s some kind of magic, and I’ll be very proud if I can ever write anything as good as some of my faves of hers.
I did The Best Day a while ago, as an In Memoriam cover for Father’s Day, and I’ve almost covered various others of her songs several times, but somehow never got around to it. I’m sure, in good time, I’ll get around to covering them. All in good time.
Lover = Grower
Let me level with you, inititally, Lover was one of my least favourite tracks on the album. At first listen, I rated it just above the songs on there that I’ll never listen to ever again (Soon You’ll Get Better is just too, too heartbreaking) and didn’t think about it much more at the time.
And then…something strange happened. I got it in my head, not even after having listened to it. It kept popping up, and then when it did come on rotation, I didn’t skip it. Before I knew it, the song had full-on become one of my favourite tracks on what’s already a very, very solid album. Like, it’s full of great songs.
So, we herald in this new year, and this new decade with something unexpected that brought me joy. Here’s the Imperfection Project cover of Lover:
The original is in waltz time, but I figured, first vid of the year, let’s keep it simple with the strumming since an injury on my arm prevented me from playing for about a week. (I’m all better now.) My absolute favourite part of this song is the end of the bridge. Or is that, the entire second bridge? The ‘dirtiest jokes’ line is so joyful. It makes me beam every single time.
